lawyers say they are concerned about questions that could raise red flags. mueller is looking into moscow s meddling in the 2016 presidential election and the possibility of collusion with members of the trump campaign and whether the president obstructed justice. president trump has repeatedly said there was no collusion and there was no obstructions. in this case the special counsel has indicated that he might want to ask president trump face to face what he was thinking when he fired fbi director comey. because, if the firing was to affect the ongoing russia investigation, that could be a crime. remember, the president told ntsb s lester holt the russia investigation was on his mind. or, maybe, about the trump tower meetings with the russians. the president says it was about opposition research on hillary clinton. if anyone solicited that thing of value from a foreign agent, that, too, could be a crime. so the headline here, no agreement from team trump to give the special counsel a
mueller lately. seems like every ten days or so, this whips back up. you have the manafort trial, as jeff mentioned. i also think he probably doesn t distinguish too much between what mueller is doing and what prosecutors in new york are looking into with cohen. you have that sort of implied threat from cohen over the trump tower meetings. and all this stuff is together. also at a time when we know his team wants him to focus on what mueller is doing as far as election hacking. we know that trump s team wanted him to try to own this issue, to focus on what we have now, over two dozen russian nationals and companies that have been targeted by mueller. it seems like some real work is being done there to sort of unwind what happened during the 2016 elections, but it s hard to for this administration to focus on that or do anything
himself from the president saying his family and country come first. bob bianchi is here. what do you think of this? it s absolutely extraordinary. it s monumental. although it was expected and we spoke about this before. there s only so much pressure you can take. here s an issue as a lawyer a prosecutor. when you are both a lawyer and a fixer, you have a problem. the lawyer piece protect communications as long as they were not conspiracy or fraud. when you re a fixer, you don t have the attorney client privilege, this is why lawyers make a clean break between legal representation of an individual as opposed to trump tower meetings and various other things because clients feel they can be shielded if they have nefarious activity. not so under the law. shepard: so if michael cohen is aware of information about that trump tower meeting, specifically about who knew what and when, that wouldn t be
comments about leaking are true but nevertheless, once that becomes a public story, it s essentially an inexcusable situation for someone who is an american hero, has bipartisan support and has a terminal illness. it s a problem and it runs into the unofficial motto of president trump, which is never apologize. there are some things that require apologies. sometimes they re public apologies and the conflict was in whether or not she made her apology privately how this was dealt with publicly. last question on the woman who stands at that podium every day, sarah sanders, she s obviously being pressed on telling the truth. she is under fire for not giving that accurate account of president trump s role in the wake of the trump tower meetings in the summer of 16.
then we have an interesting constitutional crisis on hand. laura: i brought up the issue of staffers. we know that special counsel brought in a number of the close staff, former staff of the president of the united states, and this is how the discussion went. let s watch. arere you concerned about any of the former trump white house staffers? i know hope hicks, her name was thrown around and working with don, jr., on the statement about the trump tower meeting. are you worried about her statements? that would be cheap. laura: he s turning the screws on her. the justice department would have to step in and act. but listen, you have jim comey who told me he didn t know what this whole thing about michael flynn was. but lawmakers saying he told them that the fbi agents didn t believe that michael flynn was
