He covered war and social upheaval in central america. He next spent six years in germany as chief of the New York Times bureau in bonn and in berlin. He covered german unification and events in other parts of europe including wars in the former yugoslavia. In 1996, the New York Times opened a new bureau in istanbul in order to provide readers with insight into turkey, a country which as you well know has become increasingly important in world affairs.
