New Zealand’s leading rider Danielle Johnson recorded her 1000 winner in her homeland when guiding Feelin’ Fancy to victory in the opening race on Wednesday at Te Aroha.
Johnson and the Jamie Richards-trained mare came from well back, storming down the centre of the track to score by two lengths in the Apparelmaster Waikato Maiden (1400m).
Johnson became the third New Zealander to achieve the feat in her homeland following on from Lisa Allpress and Trudy Thornton while trailblazer Lisa Cropp rode more than 1000 winners also but many of them were in Australia.
“What people are saying to me makes me realise what a big achievement it is,” Johnson told NZ Racing Desk prior to Wednesday’s meeting.

Sam Collett has been at the top of racing s tree long enough to know how this works.
Already a premiership champion, winner of the last two Auckland Cups and one of the most popular jockeys in the country, Collett knows the first day of 2021 could go different ways.
In the dream scenario, Collett could have two perfect rides and snare the $200,000 Railway with Levante and the $100,000 Rich Hill Mile with Coventina Bay.
