VANCOUVER An out-of-control wildfire burning about six kilometres north of Osoyoos, B.C., has forced the evacuation of more than 200 properties and left many others on evacuation alert. The aggressive Nk’Mip fire has grown to an estimated 2,000 hectares, filling the skies with smoke as crews work to control the flames. Jared Casmier says he saw the fire flare up on the mountainside, and within hours, word came that he had to leave. “Just chaos, all the fire and all the smoke,” he said, describing the scene. Casmier says many people living on Osoyoos Indian Band land are worried what they might come back to.

More than 200 universities are requiring their students – and in some instances, faculty and staff – to be vaccinated against COVID-19 for the fall semester.
Although the University of Miami has not yet announced if it will follow suit, UM President Julio Frenk said by the end of May that UM will provide more guidance about “a safe return in the fall.”
In an April 30 message to the campus community, Frenk stressed the importance and value of vaccinations.

Dec. 17 Inside a large conference room at the Hilton Miami Dadeland on Baptist Health South Florida s campus Wednesday, employees from the healthcare system lined up to receive their doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine under an abstract light fixture designed to illuminate the types of corporate events that went away in March.
Jose Ojeda, a pharmacist who works in the emergency department, was one of the Baptist employees lining up for a dose that could bring him closer to that pre-pandemic world. He was receiving it two days before his 29th birthday. Ojeda said he had hoped to get the vaccine before then a first step in putting a scary year behind him.
