One idyllic afternoon in early July, 1862, the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson rowed towards Godstow with his friend Robinson Duckworth (also a man of the cloth) and three VIP passengers – Lorina, Alice, and Edith Liddell, the young daughters of the Dean of Christchurch. To pass the time, the girls asked for a story and Dodgson happily obliged, conjuring a tale of three children – Elsie, Lacie, and Tillie – who lived at the bottom of the ‘treacle well’ (a landmark in St Margaret’s churchyard, Binsey). How the weir may look if built. Picture: Oxford City Council/ Environment Agency PROPOSALS to replace a damaged weir over the Thames will be discussed by Oxford planning chiefs this week. The weir, a kind of small dam, sits across the Thames next to the Trout Inn south of Godstow Bridge. The current structure, named Godstow Weir B is made of concrete and dates back to the 1930s. It could be replaced by a new, modern-looking concrete weir which would include a fish pass , if plans for the work is given the go-ahead by Oxford City Council s west area planning committee today.

22 pleasure boats could be moored up at the new marina, if plans are approved A new inland marina could be built in the East Yorkshire countryside after plans were submitted to the council.
Up to 22 boats could moor up on the River Hull if the significant development is to be granted approval by East Riding of Yorkshire Council planners.
The new marina would be built on the Driffield Navigation stretch of the waterway and could be used by leisure boats when complete.
