for the unemployment rate to drop to 3.5% by the end of next year. that s pretty incredible given the unemployment rate hit nearly 15% by the end of last year. and wall street expects the federal reserve to slow down its bond buying stimulus program. there s reason for cautious optimism because businesses clearly want to hire. this is not a demand issue. there s a record number of job openings. wage growth is growing at the fastest pace in seven months. but there is clearly a supply problem. employers are having trouble finding workers. some have retired, others are demanding higher pay and more flexible work. and parents are still dealing with child care and school headaches. just look at how 309,000 women dropped out of the work force last month alone. employment at schools also unexpectedly declined in
sneak in a question about the unemployment cliff that s looming where federal enhanced benefits are set to run out in a couple of days. reporting indicates there s internal debate about whether to extend them. what happens in the economy if the benefits lapse next week? a lot of people have been very worried about that. i m less worried and i ll tell you why. there are labor shortages in some areas of the economy. before this surge of delta, people have had trouble finding workers in transportation, logistics, travel and tourism. as the benefits roll back and people are saying, hey, i do need to go back to work. school is starting. you might see some of those pressures abating. i m not so worried about that effect. i think you re going to see democrats in particular really pushing for that infrastructure bill and help with things like child care benefits, education to be pushed through in lieu of
you know, we are really looking as much as we can. mike: rochelle, how are things looking there in the texas coast and tell us about your cool business? our business is absolutely slammed. i think that this is probably the busiest i ve ever seen our little tourist town, that s for sure. we are definitely as far as having lots of trouble finding workers. overall, you know, we are excited because we really needed this after everything that happened last year but, yeah, we are stretched pretty thin so we are just we are just trying to make it right now with the people that we have. mike: you find people that are excited in cool custom vehicles and hit the sand or hit the golf course? oh, yeah. i think that people were itching to get out, you know, it is a gateway to see our little island, get on the golf cart
