(CNN)Tropical Storm Cempaka strengthened into a typhoon early Tuesday over the South China Sea. The storm had winds up to 120 kph (75 mph) and was located about 185 kilometers (115 miles) southwest of Hong Kong as of 5 p.m. ET. Further intensification is not expected as it nears land. This satellite image shows Typhoon Cempaka on Tuesday morning. Landfall is expected Tuesday afternoon or evening local time near the city of Yangjiang in southeastern China s Guangdong Province.

As of 8 a.m., Cempaka was centered 860 kilometers west of Taiwan s southernmost tip and moving west-northwest at a speed of 5 km per hour. It was carrying maximum sustained winds of 119 kph, with gusts of up to 155 kph, according to the CWB. The storm is expected to slowly head north toward Guangdong province in China and will not affect Taiwan, the CWB said.

The CWB said Tuesday the storm will come close to Taiwan starting Thursday and that its impact will be mostly felt Friday and Saturday, especially in northern and northeastern Taiwan, where it will deliver powerful winds and heavy rain. The CWB expected to issue a sea warning for In-fa in the coming days but was not yet able to predict whether the tropical storm, which could at one point be upgraded to a typhoon, will make landfall in Taiwan.
