our fighting men are not going to be worn down. our mediators are not going to be talked down. and our allies are not going to be let down. thank you, and good night. the speech this evening was a culmination of more than a month of background speculation, and i d like to know if, indeed, there is anything new in the speech tonight. roger, i think the immediate visceral reaction is same old stuff. the president did not announce any limited u.s. troop withdrawals. he announced no u.s. troop withdrawals at all. there just isn t a great deal in this speech that the american people will immediately recognize as new. you think there will be a way to peace after listening to president nixon s speech? maybe the next three, four years, but no way soon.
nichols spoke with our colleague last night about those troop withdrawals. let s listen to what he said. the timing of this seems like this is the president as he has done in the past trying to get ahead of a nnews cycle. when it happens, that s a different story. even if this does happen, it will happen in phases over a draw down of a long period. from the point of view of negotiations, it s less important than the political point that was made by announcing it in a dramatic fashion. hans, have you heard anything to substantiate this idea that the president is using troop withdrawals as a distraction? reporter: not really. and i would just be very clear on this. the president indicated a couple of weeks ago, maybe even last month, that he wanted to bring the number down to 8,400, which is basically the number that we are going get at here. this isn t this could be an announcement later in the week. we do know that nbc broke it
there s been a serious of mercurial decisions made by the president of the united states that has involved troop movements, troop withdrawals from northern syria that rattles the nature of troop movements in the middle east, american troop movements. do you get any sense from the pentagon, from people below the chairman of joint chiefs of staff, from colonels, people in charge of platoons, any sense of concern about what this is doing both to the morale of the american military and the idea of forced protection in the middle east for these withdrawing troops to various regions? well, i think the actions that the president took relative to syria are a colossal mistake. and while i haven t been able to talk to any of our troops, when they were leaving in their convoys they were being pummelled by rotten fruit by the
