DEHRADUN: The Uttarakhand BJP legislature party will meet today at 3pm to elect a new leader after Tirath Singh Rawat resigned as chief minister on Friday night.
Amid suspense over the new pick, BJP state chief Madan Kaushik has already confirmed that the new chief minister would be from among the party MLAs.
There are at least half a dozen legislators who are being regarded as frontrunners for the key post.
The names doing the rounds include former CM Trivendra Singh Rawat, tourism minister Satpal Maharaj, minister Bishan Singh Chuphal, legislator Pushkar Dhami, state party chief Madan Kaushik and higher education minister Dhan Singh Rawat.

DEHRADUN: In what seemed to be a repeat of the scenario that unfolded in the political landscape of Uttarakhand in March, when Trivendra Singh Rawat was replaced by Tirath Singh Rawat, political circles were abuzz on Thursday with talk of another change of guard at the top in the state.
What fuelled the speculation was the fact that chief minister Tirath Singh Rawat, who was urgently summoned to Delhi a day before and met party chief JP Nadda and home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday night just as Trivendra was hastily called in the middle of the assembly session in March and met the party leadership prior to his removal was asked to stay back though he was scheduled to return to Dehradun on Thursday evening. This, sources said, hinted that the party leadership had perhaps made up its mind to replace Rawat with another MLA for the top post.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat has been in Delhi for the past three days over worries that he may lose his four-month-old job because of the uncertainty over an election that he needs to win and a rift in the state BJP unit.
Tirath Rawat was summoned to Delhi on Wednesday by the BJP leadership and yesterday, he was asked to stay put, sources say.
