The Barbados Private Sector Association (BPSA) has sent a strong message to Government that it must face and fix the troubling findings in the Auditor General’s report as a matter of urgency.The body which represents the interests of business also wants the Mia Mottley administration to make provisions for a functioning Public Accounts Committee.BPSA Chairman Trisha Tannis did not mince words as she placed on record the group’s deep concern regarding “the glaring deficiencies in financial accounting management, the lack of proper internal controls at many state entities as reported by the Auditor General, and the need for greater accountability on the part of public sector officers who are charged with the management of public funds”.“This state of affairs as reported by the Auditor General is, and continues to be, a perennial blot on the good reputation of Barbados as a well-governed state. Two of the island’s largest trade unions along with the Barbados Private Sector Association (BPSA) have thrown their support behind the reform of the National Insurance Fund.General secretary of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) Richard Green; general secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) Toni Moore and chairman of the BPSA Trisha Tannis, all agree that there is a need for a more stable and sustainable fund.Speaking during a press conference at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre after it was revealed that the fund was in danger of being depleted within the next 12 to 19 years, Green said the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) needed to be revitalized.He revealed that the fastest growing division in the NUPW was the retirees division.
A wave of tributes flooded in for former international tax and trade expert Ben Arrindell who passed away on Wednesday.Arrindell, who served as an adviser to the Barbados Government for more than three decades on the double taxation treaty strategy, the development of new legislation, and the impact of international tax developments on the international business sector, has been hailed by Prime Minister Mia Mottley as a “faithful and competent advisor to the country in a variety of roles”.“That’s because Ben was as unassuming as he was knowledgeable and competent.
