The Hampton Planning Commission recommended approval of a plan that would divide the city into 51 zones, and allow only 1% of homes in the zone to operate as short-term rentals. But some residents argued tourist-heavy areas like Buckroe Beach should be allowed higher density.
In December, Hampton council members voted to require all short-term rental operations to have a use permit and a business license. Before approving any short-term rental applications, the council is trying to devise guidelines to regulate the growing industry.
