That its more than just making access available. If access is denied it doesnt make any difference whether or not you have sold those leases. Its all about being able to access them. Let me move to a second question here. And this relates to my on going frustration on behalf of king cove. You made that decision to abandon the opportunity for a roughly 300 to 1 exchange to facilitate a 10mile onelane gravel road. You made that decision december 23rd of 2013. Do you know when king cove saw its most recent medivac . Im not aware of their most recent it was sunday. Sunday night. Do you know how many medivacs have been carried out so far . Is theres been five. Do you know how many were carried out last year . There were 16. 16 were coast guard, ten were noncoast guard. Do you know how many have been carried out . 21 medivacs. 7 coast guard, 14 noncoast guard. Now, as you and i know, its not the coast guards mission to provide merks edivacs services. But they do so because they are the only
Apply and a lot of people are getting hit with these huge bills that they do not know about. A lot of the consumer advocates that we talked to said that lawmakers really need to step up on this and take some sort of action to close the loophole in the overall law for Debt Collection so that it does include government Debt Collection as well as consumers consumer Debt Collection so that everyone is on the same Playing Field and that consumers do not end up in these situations. Budget to help the people of king cove . What have you actually done over these past 14 months to fulfill the promise that you made, because you said that you have concluded that other methods of transport remain that could be improved to meet community needs. What has been done to help the people . Can i have a few minutes . Please. As we talked, senator, we have engaged conversations with corps of engineers about alternatives. Negotiating an mlu with them. It is i think approximately 40 miles between king cove and cold bay, if you drive there. Its ten miles through the refuge. You already have most of that road built. And as i have spoken with people in the community when you and i were both there it is very difficult in harsh weather conditions to move around that territory, period. So i have worked with the corps of engineers. Were continuing to do that to look at alternatives, such as Helicopter Services between cold bay and the end of the road that is built as you referenced, bec
The coast guard knows that and you know that. And in the meantime, 21 medivacs to pluck people out to get them to some level of safety when a tenmile onelane gravel, noncommercial use road could help save these lives. Weve got to keep working on this, madame secretary. Senator, i recognize this issue and i also recognize that this is not a unique situation. That there are many villages that struggle in the case of medical evacuations. And i appreciate that it is part of our job to work on that. And i will continue to work on that. That is true. That there are many villages. But there are none none that have ready access to an allweather airport right there. I think we should talk to the senator who has an Appropriations Committee and talk to her about what we can do. Im just pointing out that in 19 t e 98 we appropriated 187 million to promote a hoefer california. So i think that was something that the Clinton Administration worked on. So maybe we need to look at something in that area
