St Paul Tribal Government One Of Seven Nationwide Recipients Of Federal STEM Grant

Credit KUCB/John Ryan A Pribilof Island community of less than 400 people has received more than $250,000 in federal funds to train locals to work at its commercial aircraft test range.  The Aleut Community of St. Paul Island Tribal Government (ACSPI) announced it was one of seven recipients nationwide to receive the Economic Development Administration s STEM Talent Challenge grant Tuesday. The ACSPI s aircraft test range will be through a partnership with Sabrewing Aircraft Company, a drone manufacturing company out of California.  The test range is expected to begin operations in the fall, according to ACSPI Project Manager Dylan Conduzzi. He says this grant will give tribal and community members access to technical training. 

Two supervisors leave Navajo County board

Special to the Independent The Navajo County Supervisors said a fond farewell to two members last week, Lee Jack and Jesse Thompson. Both members of the Navajo Nation, Jack and Thompson have long, distinguished records of community service, the soft-spoken courtesy of the Navajo and an abiding commitment to creating links between the residents of the reservation and the rest of the county. The board paused on Tuesday to recognize the deep contributions of Thompson and Jack, who have often set the tone for the supervisors. Their heartfelt opening prayers and invocations, occasional use of Navajo from the dais, frequent expressions of gratitude, a reluctance to confront or criticize and a commitment to constituent service have all set the tone for the convivial board meetings.

San Bernardino Symphony welcomes new board members

The San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra recently welcomed seven new members to its board of directors as part of a strategic board expansion initiative. The symphony was founded in 1929, but did not formally establish a board until 1963 when founding president of California State University San Bernardino John M. Pfau was the first to be elected to that office. Currently, the position is held by Dean McVay, a partner with Lewis Brisbois, Bisgaard & Smith LLP. The symphony added five new seats to the create a 30-member board. Two of the new members will fill seats vacated by retiring members. The seven new members join a who’s who of the region’s leadership, both currently and historically. Previous board members have included civil attorney and San Bernardino Community College District’s longest-serving elected trustee Allen Gresham; former publisher of the San Bernardino Sun and founder of Century Group Media Gerald Bean; philanthropist/real estate developer Edward G
