this is cnn breaking news. i m jake tapper. we have this breaking news. reports of a shooting. reports of multiple victims. that according to las vegas police who apprehended the suspect. she is monitoring this from her . what can you tell us? reporter: we are getting a lot of information. we are just trying to sort out right now. what we are learning is noteworthy to say that we do know the shooter come as the las vegas metropolitan police department has said, the shooter has been contained and is now no longer alive. that part we do know. however, we do know this started around noon local time. just about an hour ago when we saw the campus impacted by this mere beam hall. also reports around student union as well. those are very close. we do know that this was steady week at unlv leading up to finals. we know that there were lots of students who were on campus. we have lost it. reporter: they were close to their classrooms. some of them were locking doors. they sa
we have one subject in custody who was driving a pickup truck behind me who apparently on the opposite side of the parade that was active was traveling in the opposite direction from the parade, struck two vehicles, and then reared off to the other side and struck a dump truck and came to rest. in the process before that truck came to rest, it struck a number of pedestrians. seven victims declined medical attention while 21 others were taken to area hospitals. five of them in serious condition. the youngest victim, 3 years old. bystanders helped triage victims. we had multiple bystanders that were helping us initially to treat the patients here. we had multiple medical providers here helping to triage and treat the patients. fortunately none of the injuries appear life-threatening. we suspect that that subject was highly intoxicated. he is in custody. he is being investigated right now and is at our dwi office. the fbi has released a statement saying in part, we are
theater and 4 died at area hospitals. the police response consisted of rushing anyone who was hit immediately into police cars and to hospitals. six area hospitals that we know of, i ll tell you what they are. triage victims, aurora south, university hospital, dennis, denver general. i m saying approximately 50, but we can t get a firm count right now and there may be some double counts, a victim was taken to one hospital and then transported to another. the suspect, who is in custody, made statements about possible explosives in possession at his residence. at this time, there is a residence in north aurora, an apartment building that we have evacuated and we are dealing
19 people were shot that day, six of them died. the youngest, 9-year-old christina green, was one of many who had gone to the safe-way store to meet arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords. christina was there with her neighbor susie i heilemann. and then gunshot. christina was shot in the chest. i was holding hands with christina. we were eyeball to eyeball. she was confused. and scared and i knew when we were lying on the ground outside of safe-way, the light went out of her eyes. as many of the victims laid bleeding in pools of blood, two men wrestled the gunmen. i put my legs on his behind his knees an my arm on the back of the small of his back and i was stepping on his neck. the gunman is in police custody. he s jared lee loughner, 22 years old. the scene was chaotic with triage victims.
