WHEELING Ohio County Schools has set forth plans to attach technology to ventilation in all school buildings that is 99.4-percent effective in preventing the spread of COVID 19 molecules in school facilities. The bipolar ionization boxes already are in place at facilities receiving HVAC upgrades through the school districts bond projects. These include Wheeling Park High School, Triadelphia Middle School and Elm Grove, Middle Creek, Steenrod and West Liberty elementary schools.

From STAFF REPORTS The student winners from the Project on Racism Contest and 37th Annual Poster Competition, sponsored by the Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs, includes several students from the Northern Panhandle. The Project on Racism Contest was presented by the Martin Luther King Jr. State Holiday Commission and the YWCA Wheeling. Entries were accepted for essays, music, and five-minute films and was open to any student from grades 1-12 attending public, private, parochial, or home school in West Virginia. “The young people in our state have creativity and passion,” said HHOMA Executive Director and Martin Luther King Jr. State Holiday Commission Chair Jill Upson. “We are honored to take part in recognizing them, what they have to say and what they have achieved.”

jking@theintelligencer.net Photo Provided – The current Steenrod Elementary School playground is about to get upgrades with help from a $5,000 Intermediate 1 Benedum Foundation grant and $5,000 from the Ohio County Board of Education. WHEELING – Young students at Steenrod Elementary School soon will be making mud pies outside where they play, and maybe even baking a real pizza pie at the end of the school year, with herbs and vegetables they’ve helped grow. Principal Michelle Dietrich and preschool teacher Beth Wallace told the Ohio County Board of Education of their plans to expand their outdoor play and instruction area for students at the school.

She wonders why the school district is making changes now in how they provide at-home education to students. “To be honest if it wasn’t working, I wouldn’t care about the change,” she said. “But it is working. Why fix something that isn’t broken?”
