EVANSVILLE, Ind. For more than a year, Newburgh pulmonologist Sugata Sensarma has been working long hours treating COVID-positive patients. But recently, his already-busy work schedule has been padded with additional telemedicine visits with patients at home – in India.
In the midst of a devastating second wave of COVID-19 in India, Sensarma is doing what he can to help from afar. Born in Calcutta, Sensarma lives in Newburgh and commutes to his practice in Paducah, Kentucky, where he treats critically ill COVID patients as well as patients with other conditions.
Because of the strain on the country s medical system and health professionals, doctors he knows in India have begun connecting Sensarma with patients there. Patients who aren t sick enough or able to go to a hospital consult Sensarma over apps such as WhatsApp and Facetime, setting up video calls despite a 10-and-a-half-hour time difference.
