PETERSBURG – City leaders are asking the state for an exception that would allow the owners of now closed Tri-City Regional Landfill to offer a “community service” to the city, and assist in the demolition of the Old Ramada Inn on E. Washington Street.
The state Department of Environmental Quality revoked the landfill’s operating permit in October 2019 for violating numerous environmental regulations. Petersburg is now asking that DEQ allow the landfill’s owner, Meridian Waste to help transport debris from a Ramada demolition in lieu of some or all fines owed against the landfill.
The derelict hotel has been subject to years of promises for redevelopment that have gone unfulfilled. Little work has been done by owner C.A. Harrison since unveiling an original development plan in 2015. City residents and officials have become increasingly distressed over the building that sits at the gateway of the city.
