Jury acquits Bay City man of shooting man in the head

CARO, MI A Bay City man who shot another man in his head during an Independence Day get-together has been cleared of wrongdoing by a Tuscola County jury.
The six-day trial of Trevor J. Payne ended Thursday, Feb. 26, with jurors finding the defendant not guilty of all 12 counts he faced: assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, plus three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and six counts of felony firearm.

CARO, MI Back in 2019, an Independence Day gathering in rural Tuscola County took a violent turn that culminated in a 38-year-old man suffering a shotgun blast to his head. Though the 20-year-old Bay City man accused of pulling the trigger is charged with several felonies, he’s maintained he fired the gun to defend a woman who was being assaulted by the older man.
A year and a half later, the case has proceeded to trial.
The trial of Trevor J. Payne, now 22, began Wednesday, Feb. 17, in Tuscola County Circuit Court. Payne is charged with single counts of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, plus three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and six counts of felony firearm.
