What wasn t even a state-recognized holiday, just one year ago, seems like it will suddenly be celebrated as the newest federal holiday when it rolls around again this Saturday. Juneteenth June 19 was unanimously voted a federal holiday by the Senate yesterday. The measure to pass a Juneteenth National Independence Day passed the house by a large margin today. President Joe Biden will need to sign the bill for it to become law.
And that puts New Jersey, which made Juneteenth a state observance on Sept. 10, and New York, which made Juneteenth a state holiday on Oct. 14, ahead of the curve. And it leaves Randy Glover, producer of Bergen County s Juneteenth Celebration in Overpeck Park Saturday from noon to 6 p.m., feeling good about himself, his colleagues, and the county.
