Washington: The hundreds of far-left and anarchist demonstrators who gathered in protest mere hours after President Joe Biden swore the oath of office last week, amid a prevailing calm helped greatly by the presence of thousands National Guard troops nationwide, signal a fracturing on the left that could become a scourge for the new administration, political leaders and experts say.

Four people arrested in Portland, Ore., rioting on Wednesday were formally charged with crimes ranging from riot to unlawful possession of a destructive device, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced Thursday.
In all, 14 cases were submitted for prosecution review and Schmidt said charges remained possible for the other 10 people after additional police investigation.
About 150 people marched on the headquarters of the Democratic Party of Oregon and a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building to protest against President Joe Biden s inauguration.
