It s been a bloody month in Winnipeg, with 11 homicides in just 33 days.
It is a startling number, featuring a crime that is statistically rare, says a local criminologist with decades of experience in the justice system. You don’t get very consistent patterns, it can be all over the place, but often it will average out over a year, University of Winnipeg Prof. Michael Weinrath said Wednesday.
He pointed to month-long spates of deadly violence in 2019 as an example of the statistical phenomenon. That year, 44 people were killed in the city, its highest number on record.
Weinrath noted violent crime rates overall were much worse in Winnipeg when he began research 24 years ago. However, homicide rates have consistently gone up.
WINNIPEG Winnipeg police say a man found dead in the William Whyte area was assaulted in his home over a prolonged period before dying of his injuries. Three people have been charged with first-degree murder in connection to the death. Winnipeg police said 33-year-old Trevor Clayton Dorion was found dead at a home in the 300 block of Burrows Avenue on May 20. A post-mortem examination confirmed Dorion had been the victim of a homicide. On Wednesday, police said investigators believe Dorion was at his home on May 8 and was assaulted over a prolonged period. Police said Dorion died of his injuries and his body was hidden in the home until officers discovered the body nearly two weeks later.

Winnipeg police say a 33-year-old man who died in May was killed by three people he knew, including a woman he was in a relationship with.
WINNIPEG Police are asking for any information involving the death of a man in the William Whyte area. Police were called to a home in the 300 block of Burrows Avenue on May 20 just before 4 p.m. When officers arrived at the home, a man was found dead inside. Police said a post-mortem was performed and it was it determined homicide was the cause of death. Police have identified the man as Trevor Clayton Dorion, 33, from Winnipeg. The homicide unit is investigating and if anyone has information, they are asked to call police at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
