Seniors Rally To Call For Removal Of Springfield Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood

3:51     A senior citizen advocacy group in Massachusetts rallied today to amplify their call for the ouster of Springfield’s top cop.      In front of Springfield City Hall, under a hot midday sun, about 40 people chanted, sang, held signs, and listened to speakers call for the removal of Springfield Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood.    The calls for Clapprood’s ouster stem from an online meeting the police commissioner had with members of the Massachusetts Senior Action Council in April to discuss police reform.  During the meeting, and in a follow-up letter to the organization, Clapprood was “defensive and dismissive” about allegations of racial bias within the police department, said Mattie Lacewell, the president of the council’s Springfield chapter.

Springfield Mayor s Legal Bills In Police Commission Suit Total Nearly $60,000

3:27     The legal bills to taxpayers are adding up in the fight between the City Council and the mayor over who should run the police department in Springfield, Massachusetts.        The city has paid out just under $60,000,so far, to a Worcester law firm to represent Mayor Domenic Sarno, who has vowed to appeal a judge’s ruling that a City Council approved ordinance creating a five-member Board of Police Commissioners is “valid and enforceable.”    Asked about the expense, Sarno declined to comment.    City Solicitor Ed Pikula said the city’s Law Department could not participate in a case that pits one branch of city government against the other, so an outside counsel had to be hired.  The attorneys representing the City Council are not charging for their work.

Springfield City Councilors Revisit Casino Ethics Ordinance

3:00     City Councilors in Springfield have discussed if changes should be made to an ethics ordinance that restricts former politicians and city administrators from taking jobs at the MGM casino.    Councilor Mike Fenton, who wrote the casino ethics ordinance that was unanimously passed by the City Council and signed by the mayor in 2015, said it may be outdated and too strict.      It creates a whole pool of people that are prohibited from employment at now one of the largest employers in the city, said Fenton.  It made sense at the time. I think it needs some adjusting.      The ordinance prohibits members of the council and the mayor from having a direct or indirect interest in the Springfield casino or being employed there for three years after leaving office.
