Grinnell Sinks Last Second Free Throws to Knock Off Washington

The theme of nail biting playoff games this week in Southeast Iowa continued on Thursday with the Washington boys’ basketball team suffering a crushing 49-48 season ending loss to Grinnell in a class 3A substate semifinal. As heard on KCII, the Demons were shorthanded once again playing without Lance Sobaski, but the Orange and Black threw the first punch with Trashaun Willis racking up 10 first quarter points and the home squad leading 15-11 after one. The Tigers’ 6’9’’ post player Owen Coffman started to take over recording 14 first half points and Grinnell flipped the script for a 31-25 halftime advantage. Coffman scored the game’s first six points of the second half to push the lead to a dozen when the Kasen Bailey led Demons started to chip away. The junior tallied 11 points after intermission and Washington slowly clawed their way back to a one possession deficit in the final minute. Demons Girls Pick Up Second Win Over Grayhounds, Boys Retake SEC Lead

A pair of Washington basketball teams left the hardwood happy last night when they won tight games against Southeast Conference foe Burlington. As heard on KCII, the Demon girls got out to a fast 11-4 start with transition points and attacking a leaky Grayhound defense. Burlington (0-12) settled in to make it an 18-13 game at half and they came out hot in the third to tie it up at 26-all after three. The fourth quarter had several lead changes, but free throws were the difference down the stretch with the Demons prevailing 36-35. Washington made 12 of 18 from the charity stripe compared to Burlington’s four of six. Anna Nacos led the way on the home court with 11 points and Alex Murphy managed a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Furious Fourth Seals Demon Boys Win at Keokuk

The entire Southeast Conference is still looking up at the Washington boys in the league standings and the Demons have a fourth quarter comeback last night to thank for that. They invaded Keokuk and triumphed in a 46-42 affair.  As heard on KCII, the Demons threw the first punch up 12-4 after five minutes and 15-8 after one. Keokuk (5-5) made adjustments defensively and shut Washington down for the next two quarters to tie it at 27 all at the break and they stormed out to a 41-31 lead heading into the fourth. Double-digit fourth quarter deficit? No sweat. It took just three minutes for the Demons to retake the lead on the strength of a couple threes from Ethan Patterson and Travis Leyden. Up two with four seconds left, Kasen Bailey calmly drilled both one-and-one free throws to salt the game away and give the Demons their first win at Keokuk in four seasons.
