Former Clarksville, current Governor star Garrett Spain prepares for MLB Draft

If you put every person to ever play in a Major League Baseball game in Yankee Stadium, whether they made the Hall of Fame or threw one pitch, it wouldn’t even be at half capacity. It’s an exclusive fraternity and an Austin Peay star is hoping to take the next step toward joining that group this week. Outfielder Garrett Spain, a Governor and former Clarksville Wildcat, is on the doorstep of the big leagues with the 2021 MLB Draft looming. The redshirt sophomore has proven his worth as an NCAA player capable of making that leap he’s played 115 games with the Governors, hitting .318 with a .400 on-base percentage. He’s smacked 19 career home runs, compiled 109 RBIs and stolen 22 bases, all while locking down center field at The Hand.

Bat Govs keep postseason hopes alive with series win over Jacksonville State – The All State

ROBERT SMITH | APSU SPORTS INFORMATION Travis Janssen earned his 150th win as head coach of the APSU baseball team on Friday, May 14. Win number 151 may have mattered more, though, in the scope of the Governors’ season. The Bat Govs, previously ranked fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference, won two out of three games from fourth-place Jacksonville State. A series win places them in the conference’s final playoff spot with one rivalry series remaining. Heading into the three-game set, Janssen met with team captains Gino Avros and Garrett Spain to see if a message to the team on the weekend’s importance was necessary. According to the coach, they were both well aware of the implications the home finale would have.

Pitching plateaus in series loss to Arkansas State – The All State

ROBERT SMITH | APSU ATHLETICS A steady staff on the mound has ultimately correlated to the success – or demise – of APSU baseball this season. In the month of April, the Governors had just one win when their opposition scored 10 or more runs in a game. Conversely, they were crowned victors in five of six games last month when pitchers allowed six or fewer runs. Heading into Tuesday’s midweek match against North Alabama, the pitching corps was trending in the right direction with an earned run average of 3.80 over their past seven contests. Against the Lions, Southeast Missouri State and Arkansas State, the Govs gave up double digit runs in four of five games. The pitching staff’s ERA in that span skyrocketed to 12.21. APSU won a thriller against UNA on Tuesday, but dropped the next four to close out the week.
