Library construction coming along well

ANGOLA —It can get a little noisy and dusty these days at the Carnegie Public Library of Steuben County as renovation work continues. Renovations in the basement are coming along well, and Director Sonya Dintaman said they anticipate the construction portion of the work to be done sometime in May. The project, which was started last fall, includes three new meeting rooms with partitions that can make the space one large room, capable of accommodating around 150 people. Also in the project is the construction of two smaller meeting rooms, lounge space, a study lounge, updated restrooms and a secure storage area.

State board: MSD violated staffs' union rights

ANGOLA — The Metropolitan School District of Steuben County committed an unfair labor practice by interfering with the collective bargaining rights of Angola’s public schools teachers union, a state board has ruled. The Indiana Education Employment Relations Board has ordered the district to cease and desist from interfering with or coercing employees who are freely exercising their right to participate in collective bargaining, said a recommended order handed down Tuesday. The IEERB’s initial ruling comes after a Dec. 9, 2020, evidentiary hearing, held by videoconference, where testimony was heard from MSD administrators and union leaders regarding the alleged wrongdoing. In July 2019, leaders of the Angola Classroom Teachers Association took the rare step of filing two unfair labor practice charges against the district for what the union said amounted to interference and coercion by the district’s refusal to engage in good faith collective bargaining with the

Angola High School orders failing students to return to school

ANGOLA — Parents and guardians of Angola High School students that are failing at virtual learning are being ordered to send their kids back to school before the month is over. High schoolers who failed or are currently failing at least one class will now have to return to school for in-person instruction before or on March 29, said a letter the high school recently sent to those families. Students may remain virtual for health reasons, but parents who fail to comply with the new policy could be referred for criminal charges, said the letter signed by Angola Principal Travis Heavin. The Herald Republican obtained a copy of the letter, dated March 1, which Heavin confirmed was mailed out last week.
