is there something about the japanese psyche, if you will, that allows them to better handle this, or is there a suppression of emotion in something like this? how do you read that? well, that s complex, because on the one hand, the communal nature of asian societies prepares people better to handle situations together. on the other hand, emotions need to come up and be released. it s all about the brain, because trauma is registered and stored in the brain, and if it s not found or released, the symptoms will continue and grow, such as flashbacks and nightmares, hypovigilance. how do you deal with that? what s the advice you give to people? well, right now it s just survival and recovery. survival right now. trauma treatment, really at this point, is more directed for rescue workers to help them to continue to do their jobs. okay. but what about those people that have witnessed things, seen their livelihoods washed away, or worse, their loved ones, and they survive?
