american plague. live from london, this is cnn newsroom with max foster. it is tuesday, july 5th, 3:00 a.m. in highland park, illinois. the chicago suburb dealing with yet another tragic mass shooting. at least six people are dead, more than two dozen wounded and a suspect is in police custody now. the shooter started just after 10:00 a.m. local time monday as people lined the parade route along central avenue in the suburb north of chicago. we have video from the scene, but we have to warn you that it is disturbing. [ gunfire ] investigators believe the gunman climbed an unsecured ladder in an alley and opened fire from a rooftop. police say the gun was a high powered rifle, the attack appears to be random and intentional. the suspect was arrested without incident a few hours later identified as robert crimo iii. he had posted anonymous videos on lineneighboring name awake the rapper. the investigation will continue. charges have not been approved yet at this time
it was because of his time in the military. that s what it sounded like. the street behind me frozen in time, you can still see the chairs strewn about, the beach chairs where people were lined up for this moment of celebration for july 4th, left where they were, as people fled the scene in terror. the rifle, a rifle was discovered soon after the shooting on the rooftop. we have some new information about that rifle, which we ll bring to you in just a moment. the shooter himself, who the police are calling a person of interest to be clear, that s what i should call him, they obtained or apprehended a person of interest eight hours after the shooting, after a short chase. one policeman saw the suspect and then called for backup, he was apprehended, taken into custody on the street. one of our reporters was there, you ll hear from him in just a moment as well. again, the scene as it unfolded here was a pure moment of terror. earlier this morning, i had a chance to speak to a co
gunman. cnn s senior investigative correspondent, drew griffin, has details. the sheriff s office reveals two incident involving the suspect. the first in april of 2019. a suicide attempt handled by mental health professionals. the secondo cured in september of 2019. a family member reported he was going to kill efveryone and he had a collection of knives. the police responded to his residence. they removed 16 knives, a dagger and sword from his home. at that time, there was no probably cause to arrest. there were no complaints that were signed by any of the victims. police say the suspected shooter preplanned his attack and get away for several weeks leaving his high powered rifle behind, dressing as a woman, and slipping away with the retreating crowds. it was that rifle purchased legally and traced back to him that helped police identify the suspect, track down his mother s car and make this arrest. at this point, we have not developed a motive from him. while po
