After the extreme low water conditions in the Mississippi River and tributaries during Fall 2022, most of the system has received beneficial moisture this winter, but some areas will need more.
At least two Cargill grain elevators on the Mississippi River have stopped taking corn and soybeans because the bins are full, and they can t send grain down the river fast enough. Meanwhile, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials on the Missouri River are reducing water releases out of Gavins Point, South Dakota. Corps officials on the Missouri River also are not authorized to increase dam releases to support the Mississippi River system.
