Transnistria is reportedly planning a referendum on joining Russia. According to security experts, a date for the vote has already been set. Russia supports the separatist region of the Republic of Moldova, and Russian troops are also stationed there. The Institute for the Study of War even describes a possible extreme scenario of an annexation of Transnistrian by Russia. However, the experts themselves consider this to be unlikely. It is more likely that Putin will welcome the measures taken by the TransNistrian Congress of Deputies.
The Moldovan pro-Russian breakaway region of Transnistria, which lies across Ukraine’s southwestern border, may announce a renewed call for annexation by the Kremlin next week, ISW analysts warn.
