Record number of new apprentice starts in isles despite economic challenge of pandemic

SHETLAND companies are said to have bucked the trend by taking on a record 87 new apprentice starts during 2020 despite the coronavirus pandemic. Train Shetland vocational manager Kevin Briggs said: “We’re very happy to have been able to support these 87 apprenticeships across the isles, and across a wide variety of employment sectors. 9 of 14Adverts “The recent Apprentice Employer’s Grant from Skills Development Scotland was a big factor in securing more apprentices in engineering, construction and social care.” A particular area which has seen an increase in apprenticeships is agriculture, with six new apprentices starting their training on farms around Shetland.

Council confident college merger will be in ready to go by start of August

A SENIOR council official says she is “entirely confident” that the local authority will be ready for the planned merger of Shetland’s tertiary eduction sector on 1 August. Upon the ‘vesting’ date at the start of August Shetland College, NAFC Marine Centre and Train Shetland will operate under one organisation – Shetland UHI. 12 of 14Adverts Shetland Islands Council’s corporate services director Christine Ferguson gave reassurances a meeting on Wednesday that things should be ready to go on 1 August, which is a new date informed by the Scottish Funding Council. She was pressed by Shetland South member Allison Duncan to provide a “categoric assurance” that everything will be in place on time.
