Nineteen new COVID-19 cases were confirmed Thursday in the Sarnia area – the region’s second straight day of double-digit increases – by the local health unit.
Of the region’s 3,369 cases since the pandemic began, 3,223 were considered resolved while 90 were still active, Lambton public health reported. At least 483 have screened positive for a variant of concern.

Seventeen COVID-19-positive patients were in hospital Wednesday, Bluewater Health reported. An outbreak was declared earlier this week inside the Sarnia hospital’s acute medicine unit after three patients tested positive. A staffer has also tested positive, the health unit reported Wednesday.

About 47 per cent of the eligible population in Sarnia and Lambton County have received at least their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as of Wednesday, the local health unit says.
More than 55,000 shots – the vast majority first doses – have been administered by Lambton public health and local hospitals, doctors and pharmacies.

Those figures are expected to climb as all residents age 40 and older can start booking appointments as of Thursday. Essential front-line employees who can’t work from home under Ontario’s second phase of the rollout also became eligible as of Tuesday. This includes staff at grocery stores, restaurants, and in the transportation and construction industries – but they must live or work locally, the health unit said.

For the first time in more than a month, a COVID-19 outbreak has been declared inside a Sarnia-area seniorsâ home.
The active incident, reported by Lambton public health, was at Afton Park Place. Five staff and two residents at the Sarnia long-term care facility tested positive as of Monday.

A spokesperson from the health unit said the majority of residents there are fully vaccinated, as theyâve received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, while most staff have also been given at least one shot. No more information was available due to privacy concerns, the spokesperson said.
