Morelock Builders, which owned rental company Sunrise Management, reported that 45 tenants reported they paid money, but the company never received their rent.
Employees contacted Springfield Police after tenants were able to show Money orders demonstrating they had paid.
A police investigation showed that Compton changed the name on checks to redirect them to “Tabitha Compton.” Some checks had “rent” in the subject memo, which was one of the ways they were able to identify the source of the checks.
