Clayton planning for sesquicentennial celebration in 2022

CLAYTON — The village has begun planning for its sesquicentennial celebration next spring. The village will turn 150 years old on April 17, 2022, will commemorate its incorporation with a historic celebration featuring a symbolic theme relating to its rich history: “150 Years — Where the Tradition Continues.” An initial advisory group has been formed and preliminary discussions held to begin planning for the expected village-wide and year-long celebration. The advisory group consists of Mayor Norma J. Zimmer, Tricia L. Bannister, Christopher D. Bogenschutz, Michael J. Folsom, Thomas F. LaClair, Linda L. Schleher and Justin A. Taylor. Ideas that have surfaced for possible events are two parades — one in summer and a second in winter — a fireworks display, a historic photo display, a fishing derby, a pageant, a beard growing contest, souvenirs, history talks, walking tours, newspaper spotlights, an Old Home Day and more. (May 3, 2021) – Race week has finally arrived for the new spring home of the Official Throwback Weekend of NASCAR at Darlington Raceway. For the first announced spring race weekend since 2004, the Lady in Black will welcome competitors, legends and fans back for the fierce competition of NASCAR’s three premier series and a host of memorable moments on May 7-9. This will be the first time the Official Throwback Weekend of NASCAR has featured all three premier series on its regular schedule with the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. To celebrate the return of spring racing, Darlington will welcome honorary guests Dale Inman, Leonard Wood, Bill Elliott, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Greg Biffle.

Since 1970, Council Road Baptist Church has celebrated Christmas Eve with a candlelight service.  “A time of seeing that God has brought us through another year. What a year this has been, said Executive Pastor Norman Behymer.  A year that has doused so many spirits but will not extinguish this half century-old tradition.  Pastor Behymer has been hard at work preparing for the Christmas Eve services, one at 6 p.m. and the other at 11 p.m.  He said changes will be made to keep people farther apart, but the message as always, will be unity.  “We have people that have come from every denomination. Some people that have moved away, come back for this service to see friends, so it’s kind of a family reunion type moment, said Behymer.
