the uk s six biggest water firms are facing legal action over claims they under reported pollution and overcharged customers. the law firm bringing the claim says customers may receive around £40 compensation, but the process could take years. trade body water uk said the accusations are without merit . ben king reports. a rising tide of anger about sewage and seas and rivers is spreading across the country, now followed by a wave of legal action. every water company has an agreement with the two regulators, the environment agency and ofwat. and it s our contention that they have been underreporting the extent of the spills of sewage that they have created because, by underreporting, they are seen as hitting their targets. and if they hit their targets, they are allowed to charge their customers more for their services.
