American Rescue Plan Act funds build on historic investments to strengthen child care for working families Governor Janet Mills announced today that the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will award nearly $5.5 million to current and new Maine child care providers in the latest round of investments her administration is making to expand the availability of affordable, high-quality child care for Maine’s working families. 

Skowhegan early learning center gets $1 6 million boost

Sam Hight, who heads a committee leading the fundraising effort for the center, announced that it will be built at the new $75 million elementary school for Maine School Administrative District 54, to be constructed at the site of the Margaret Chase Smith School off Heselton Street.

Senate President Troy Jackson (D - Allagash) sponsored LD 1712, An Act To Support Children s Healthy Development and School Success. Governor Janet Mills signed it into law on Monday.  The law will use hundreds of millions of federal and state dollars combined to allow childcare facilities to offer more openings for students in existing child care programs through the First 4 ME program administered by the Department of Health and Human Services. It will also provide coaching to interested childcare agencies to promote better outcomes for kids.
