Tinder has been testing integrated background checks offered by Garbo for almost a year. The service is now live for all Tinder users via the app's Safety Center and claims it to be the first-of-its-kind.
Popular dating app Tinder has reportedly added a tool that lets users run background checks on prospective dates. Following years of negative public opinion due to Tinder being used to set up women for crimes, parent company Match Group has enabled a system that will offer a background check on potential dates for arrests and convictions of violent crimes, along with sex offender registry status.
Tinder’s parent company will now offer background searches for app users and the general public through its partnership with Garbo, a first-of-its-kind, non-profit background-check platform.
Although the goal is to make app users feel safer about their dates, the service could raise new concerns about how people will use it and what they may take away from it.
