elizabeth, thank you. i mentioned some of the tracer fire over the skies of tripoli in the capital city of libya. i want to go to nic robertson who is on the phone. as we look at live pictures, nic, when did this start? reporter: brooke, this started just a few minutes ago. i would say within the last ten minutes we heard tracer fire or heard gunfire and saw tracers ripping up into the sky. it s not clear what they were targeting in the early hours of this morning we heard what sounded like coalition aircraft flying overhead. right now we have no idea about the gunfire started up. it sounds a bit more distant than the gunfire we heard from gadhafi s palace. some of the antiaircraft gunfire sounds as if it s coming from two or three miles away, as if it s coming programs from the harbor area of the city. aga
but they seem to be now getting into the routine of this happening. this is the third time tonight and it s only midnight right now. what looks like to me, nic, is that the allies either send a missile in or a jet fighter overhead. they attack a target. and then the libyans just sort of randomly start shooting their anti-aircraft weapons into the sky. not necessarily aiming at anything but hoping to get lucky, if you will. is that the sense you get, as well? s reporter: that is. and military people know more about military things than i do tell me what they re trying to do is create an arc of fire through the sky. that s where they wave the weapon and you see those tracers move through the sky sideways because they re trying to create an arc or a field of fire that would intercept something flying through because they very likely wouldn t see a missile flying. at night, if you re lucky, you will perhaps see a missile as it
in our morning, that wasn t the case last night or the night before. we re in the target zone not far from this hotel where we re staying, 130 journalists are, command and control centers and some target. it s been wave upon wave, usually about a dozen or more, between 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. it was no different last night. you can t hear planes flying overhead [ inaudible ] [ inaudible ] hear and see the reaction on the ground to them. often indiscriminate fire, they call it defensive fire. it s tracers going in every which way. and last night, last night there was an explosion. it was the first time that our building was actually impacted by it. we saw smoke in the general direction of the gadhafi compound. we were invited by our minders to go there. some of us said yes. others like myself said, don t think so. so that s too much of a human shield situation. those who did go were shown a building that was hit. clearly by shrapnel and chunks
