Zionsville business openings hope to be a signal for resurgence

ZIONSVILLE, Ind. PROSE Nails in Zionsville is one of multiple businesses with an upcoming grand opening. Hopefully you can see the happiness on my face, said Scott Buchner, owner of PROSE Nails Zionsville. “It’s a little crazy to start a business, but sometimes you’ve got to be crazy and that’s OK.”
2020 was a year full of loss for small businesses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but in the spring of 2021, central Indiana is starting to see a trend in the right direction. The Town of Zionsville says so far, four new businesses have opened to date.

Zionsville Police Department Chief Michael Spears and Mayor Emily Styron recently announced support of legislation that would establish a regional Gun Crimes Task Force. State Rep. Greg Steuerwald is proposing HB 1558 to address violent crime in Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Marion, Morgan, Johnson and Shelby counties by delivering, in cooperation with state and federal officials, a uniform strategy to trace firearms used to commit crimes.

In 2019, in response to the increasing homicide rates and presence of crime guns in Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) launched the Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC) to better trace crime guns and identify suspects. Nine cities in Indiana will work on projects to reduce their impact on the planet: Bloomington, Carmel, Elkhart, Fort Wayne, Gary, Goshen, Richmond, West Lafayette and Zionsville. They’re taking the next step after completing their greenhouse gas inventories.
During the first years of the program in 2019 and 2020, 17 municipalities partnered with Indiana University’s Environmental Resilience Institute to find out which sectors emit the most gases that contribute to climate change and try to make them greener. Some also made climate action plans.
