Oak Island offers miles of beach, ample seafood and brilliant sunsets

View Comments We’re getting back to doing the things we love after many months of staying at home. Once fully vaccinated, we make a beeline for the beach. Oak Island, N.C., calls us to its sandy shore and fishing piers. The 12-mile-long island is home to more birds than people. Sanderlings, gulls and pelicans patrol the expansive beach and dunes. The Town of Oak Island has a fudge shop, donut shop, ice cream parlor, a few grocery stores, a dozen restaurants and not much else. The Town of Caswell Beach, with its historic lighthouse, golf course and mix of year-round and vacation homes, stretches across the eastern tip of sun-lit Oak Island.

Coastal News Today | NC - Oak Island residents speak out against beach nourishment fee proposal

The Town of Oak Island has spent five years creating a beach nourishment master plan. Town leaders are proposing dividing the town into four districts based on proximity to the beach, and charging homeowners a monthly beach nourishment fee based on that location and property size. “I don’t think dividing up into districts and having one district pay a significant amount more than a district a mile away from the beach is really a fair process,” said resident Kenny Kidd. The town held a meeting Tuesday night for residents and homeowners to voice their concerns. “The council is looking at a $40 million plan,” said resident Jacqueline Mariotte. “That’s a lot of money for a small island.”
