DEEP Announces Recipients of Inaugural Round of Grants for Aquatic Invasive Species Control on Lakes, Ponds and Rivers
$360,000 Awarded to 21 Projects that Will Help Restore CT Waterbodies
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) today announced the recipients of the inaugural round of grant funding through the Aquatic Invasive Species Grant Program, with a total of $360,000 going to 21 projects to reduce impacts of aquatic invasive species on inland waters in Connecticut.

COVENTRY â On the eastern side of Coventry, a small body of water has long been a favorite spot of swimmers, kayakers and anglers, alike. But with aquatic invasives threatening its future, a group of residents is on a mission to restore the lake they love by keeping the troublesome plants at bay.Â
âWe wanted to save the lake,â Tom Pendergast, vice president of the newfound Upper Dam Pond Conservation Association, said during a beach cleanup event over the weekend.Â
Like many bodies of water across southern New England, Upper Dam Pond is plagued by aquatic invasive plants. Tangled among the native lilies that dot its surface, variable milfoil has begun to choke the pond, known locally as Breezy Lake.Â

PROVIDENCE â Rhode Island Secretary of State Nellie M. Gorbea has allocated $233,586 towards communities and towns for the costs associated with running the upcoming special election in March.Â
The special referenda election, set to take place on March 2, will place seven questions before voters regarding the authorization of bonds and temporary notes. Both borrowing means are being put forward with the intent to make capital investments in several different areas, including education, housing and infrastructure.Â
These funds being allocated to towns and cities across the state are part of a $632,189 grant Center for Election Innovation and Research (CEIR), which Gorbea secured in October of 2020, ahead of the general election.
