The state House of Representatives this week passed a bill that would change the way incarcerated individuals are counted in legislative districts from prison location to their address at the time of arrest.
âThe point is people should be counted in the place where they actually find representation,â said state Sen. Gary Winfield, D-New Haven. âIf you go in and you re (residing) in New Haven and you get out (and return to) New Haven, why would you be counted in Cheshire or Enfield?â

CHESHIRE â The town has experienced its fair share of hardship this past year.
In addition to a global pandemic and an economic slump, the town also dealt with storms that left residents without power for days. Despite that, however, Town Manager Sean Kimball is optimistic about the future.
At a Town Council meeting earlier this month, Kimball unveiled his 2021 goals and objectives for the coming year, which were passed unanimously by the council.Â

CHESHIRE â The Town Council dove into the biggest line item of the yearly operating budget this week, as attention turned to the education budget request for the upcoming fiscal year.Â
The budget of $78,487,052, recommended in January by the Board of Education, and again by Town Manager Sean Kimball in March, calls for a 5.22% increase in spending over last year, with a majority of the funds set to replenish the districtâs medical benefit fund, which school officials say has been under-funded for a number of years.Â

CHESHIRE â Fire Chief Jack Casner has been named as the 2020 Connie Wallace Employee of the Year.
Casner, who has served 16 years as fire chief, was honored earlier this month at a Town Council meeting. In announcing the award, Council Chair Rob Oris outlined Casnerâs long history with the town.
âChief Casner has served 16 years as chief of the Cheshire Fire Department, and many more years as a volunteer firefighter, and he reflects Cheshire in the highest standards,â Oris said. âChief Casner also serves as the Town of Cheshire Emergency Manager, and has been working around the clock during the pandemic to service the needs of the community.â
