This unique Colchester estate brought classes together in Victorian Britain NEW Town, named in contrast to the “old town” centred primarily inside and near the Roman Wall, is the only part of Colchester designed to accommodate “upper, middle and lower or working classes” - a dominant feature of the structure of class segregated life in Victorian Britain. This comprises around 470 houses built from the 1880s on what had been fields behind older dwellings in Magdalen Street and Military Road (as far as Camp Church) and facing Wimpole Road. Subsequent housing developments in Colchester throughout the 20th century and into the 21st do not have such a deliberate social mix and built-form characteristics in the variable size and design of the dwellings in the same community.
The Lodge Cottages for the Hanbury’s former home of Pontypool House. Picture: Torfaen Museum. THE HOUSES shown here are the Lodge Cottages for the Hanbury’s former home of Pontypool House, described as Town Lodge (as distinguished from the other, former Park Lodge at the Pontymoile Gates). There were three separate cottages within this building at the north entrance to the house and parkland – which you can see from the three chimneys on this photograph. One house faced towards the roadway to the stables (now museum) and Pontypool House (now St Alban’s R C High School), one faced towards Park Road, and the other to what is now the car park but was then a hedged entrance to the blacksmith s workshop to the rear of the stables.

South Africa’s City Lodge Hotel Group has announced its exit from Kenyan market, by opting to sell its three hotels including Fairview Hotel, Town Lodge and City Lodge Two Rivers.
The group will also sell its City Lodge Hotel in Dar es Salaam, saying that it has already received an offer from a willing buyer.
“Shareholders are advised that following receipt of an unsolicited non-binding offer for the proposed acquisition of City Lodge’s East African operations, comprising of its hotels situated in Kenya and Tanzania, the company has entered into negotiations which, if successfully concluded, may have a material effect on the price of the Company’s securities,” said City Lodge Hotel Group at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
