The governments plans. Our correspondent Rupert Wingfield hayes reports from hong kong. Fellow citizens and members of the media. As she stood alone at the podium, carrie lam must have known every pair of eyes in hong kong was watching her. After a week of mass street protests and running battles between protesters and police, would she or wouldnt she back down and drop the widely hated extradition bill . I now announce that the government has decided to suspend the legislative amendment exercise. Not a withdrawal, then. So is this just a trick to pacify the protesters . It has nothing to do with an intention or wish to pacify. How could i restore, as fast as possible, the calm in society, and how could i avoid any more Law Enforcement officers and ordinary citizens being injured . The fear of more angry protesters returning to these barricades is what has prompted carrie lam and her administration to make what is clearly a major climb down. This is not a temporary pause to the extradi
Why are people still planning to march . That is a very good question. Iam standing march . That is a very good question. I am standing in victoria park, the gathering point for todays demonstration. In the coming hours they are expecting large numbers of people to turn out and much to oppose this extradition proposal. Now, there are two reasons why people will still come out. They are saying, one, although the government here was forced into a humiliating backdown, putting its extradition plans on the backburner, they want this that the protest that is it that they want carrie lam and the administration say we will not have administration say we will not have a bill which would allow residents and visitors here to face court in china. They want that bill abolished altogether. The second reason is, they are emboldened, they had a massive victory and it is a people power that hasnt done this. The government, with this system in the legislature has a number to get any bill through it onc
Now on bbc news, monday in parliament. Hello, welcome to monday in parliament. After a weekend of killings in london, mps tell ministers to get a grip. Wheres the passion, the idignation, the horror about what is happening on our streets . Notjust in london, but across the country. Questions about hospital food safety as nhs patients die from listeria. Why on earth people who are seriously ill or frail were being fed sandwiches . And saving the planet patience is wearing thin in the house of lords. Why is it possible to choose a Prime Minister in eight weeks when its impossible for defra to make a decision about bag charges, which all the industry favours, in about 80 weeks . All that to come and more. But first, four men died in suspected murderers over four days across london. Three of the deaths were stabbings, the fourth was a fatal shooting. After the attacks, donald trump tweeted that the mayor of london, sadiq khan, was a disaster and a national disgrace. Labour suggested the us
About 25 years theyre clocking off the shortest day theyve had. So off the shortest day theyve had. So essentially what theyre doing is working less for more money with this 5. 5 pay increase. Yeah the house of commons is rising now at about 430 in the afternoon. Now people can remember back to some of the midnight sittings that mps used to do. Were a long way away from that now. Late votes seem to be a thing of the past, and mps can seemingly go back to their offices and put their feet up around 430. I wonder if under if there is a labour government, i wonder with all the stuff about Flexible Working and, you know, being able to bring your children to work, they wont need of these benches at need all of these benches at all. Theyll probably be working from what from home. Isnt that what yvette from home. Isnt that what yve but question from home. It comes after Senior Tories were reported to have attempted to downplay claims of a conservative plot to replace the Prime Minister with Penny Mordaunt. The move would mean a fourth leader of the party in just five years. Mr harper says that, unlike labour, the conservatives have a plan on delivering for the country. Youve got to show them by the time of the election two things weve got to show them that weve got a plan. The plan is working and its delivering for them, and i think we can see that is on inflation and on that it is on inflation and on taxes.
