LONDON, UK/MADRID, Spain - The latest edition of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer confirms the rapid slowdown of international tourism growth since mid-2008, reflecting the impact of rising oil prices at the beginning of the year and the deterioration of the economic situation, as well as of consumer confidence in recent months. Overall growth for 2008 is though still projected at around 2 percent, building on the strong results of the first five months. GENEVA, 1 July 2021: The crash in
international tourism due to the coronavirus pandemic could cause a loss of
more than USD4 trillion to the global GDP for the years 2020 and 2021,
according to a UNCTAD report released on Wednesday 30 June.
The estimated loss has been caused by the

Ironically, tourism losses are reduced in most developed countries but worsened in tourist-dependent developing countries because of vaccine inequity.

This was according to a United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) report , jointly presented with the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), today (June 30).
International tourism and its closely linked sectors suffered an estimated loss of $2.4 trillion in 2020 alone, due to the direct and indirect impact of a steep drop in international tourist arrivals.
A similar loss, of $1.8 trillion to $2.4 trillion is expected in 2021, the report warned, noting that the tourism sector’s recovery will largely depend on the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines globally.
