This was just a few weeks before world war ii in europe was over, just a couple of months before world war ii in the Pacific Theater was over. Roosevelt made it almost to the end of the war. Six days later, april 18, the reporter, ernie pyle, was killed on an island in the western pacific. Killed by japanese machinegun fire. Obviously these were not equally traumatic events to the country. But it is kind of remarkable that just six days after roosevelts death, who had been president for 12 years, the new president harry truman issued a statement at the white house, a statement of bereavement recognizing the death of ernie pyle, a newspaper reporter. President truman said the nation is quickly saddened at the death of ernie pyle.
