No people were hurt but a cat died when fire significantly damaged a house Friday in southeast Topeka s Highland Park community. Another cat survived after being rescued.
Firefighters were called just before 11 a.m. to the scene at 2729 S.E. Wisconsin Ave, four blocks west of S.E. California Avenue, said Topeka Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.
Preliminary investigation indicated the fire ignited accidentally, most likely due to the improper disposal of smoking material, Harrison said.

The cause of the blaze was undetermined and remained under investigation, said Topeka Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.
Firefighters were called just before 9 p.m. Sunday to 1179 S.W. Garfield Ave., where they arrived to find heavy flames coming from the rear of a two-story house, Harrison said. Firefighters searched that house and found no home, he said.
The blaze spread to damage a house next door at 1177 S.W. Garfield Ave., Harrison said.
Damages were estimated at $25,000 to the structure and $2,500 to its contents at 1179 S.W. Garfield and $5,000 to the structure at 1177 S.W. Garfield, he said.
Working smoke detectors weren t found in the house where the blaze began, Harrison said.
