Topeka Unified School District 501 will now allow two parents or adults per student-athlete to attend games, the Topeka Board of Education decided Thursday evening.
The move comes a day after the Kansas State High School Activities Association Board of Directors voted to increase its spectator limit from two per participant to four, starting Jan. 29. USD 501 had not allowed any spectators at its events, even though KSHSAA had in December voted to allow two spectators during the winter sports season.
The board voted 6-1 on the measure, with Lalo Muñoz voting against. The request to begin allowing students came through Superintendent Tiffany Anderson’s student advisory committee, represented at the school board meeting by senior Kelm Lear, a member of the men’s soccer team.
