University of Kansas junior Azja Butler has been awarded the Brian âBaby Joâ Johnston Debater of the Year Award by the Cross Examination Debate Association, one of the largest collegiate debate associations in the U.S.
The award comes just two weeks after Butler, who s also co-president of KU Debate, won the Top Speaker award at the 75th annual National Debate Tournament.Â
âIt was really emotional, just because everyone who knows me knows it s been a really hard year,â Butler said.Â
According to the CEDA website, âthe ideal candidate demonstrates competitive success and a commitment to represent the highest values of the debate community.
University of Kansas Debate Co-President Azja Butler won the Top Speaker award at last weekendâs 75th annual National Debate Tournament.Â
For Butler, a junior from Lansing, Kansas, who has been participating in debate for the last eight years, winning Top Speaker meant a lot.
âHonestly, Iâm still kind of in shock about it,â Butler said. âI know for people who donât really do debate, they donât really understand what it means to win that.â

WHEELING The victory took an extra year in coming, but the wait made the Wheeling Park High School speech team’s 41st consecutive state championship Saturday all the more sweeter, said head coach Bill Cornforth.
The team once again won the overall sweepstakes of the 2021 West Virginia Speech and Debate Tournament, with team members also taking home another 12 individual first-place trophies.
This year’s tournament took place virtually after the 2020 tournament was canceled due to COVID concerns, and students competed from classrooms at their home schools.
There was no traveling to a tournament site. Instead, students learned of their victories during a virtual award presentation ceremony they watched together from WPHS’s Beneke Theatre.
