good morning, i m marci gonzalez in for diana perez. and i m john muller. we start this morning with homeland security officials issuing a warning to airlines about a dangerous new terrorist threat, one that will sound very familiar. they say airport security screeners should be on the lookout for shoes used to smuggle explosives on to commercial jets. here is abc s pierre thomas. reporter: homeland security officials are warning airline that is explosives hidden in shoes and other improvised bombs are an active ongoing threat. abc news learns that terrorists are building shoe bombs with liquid explosives, hidden in containers to target international flights. no plot has been identified but intelligence from credible overseas sources suggest that terrorist bomb makers are fixated on these efforts. it certainly tells you that al qaeda is still fascinated with taking down planes. we recently had a toothpaste scare. now we re going back to shoes.

al qaeda is still fascinated with taking down planes. we recently had a toothpaste scare. now we re going back to shoes. reporter: the new threat comes only two weeks after authorities warn of bombs hidden in toothpaste containers at the start of the sochi olympics. roughly 12 years after richard reid was caught on board an international flight trying to light his shoes. the shoe bomb containing a powerful plastic explosive could have taken down the plane carrying 197 people. here is the damage it could have caused. the incident changed airline security forever. to this day when u.s. passengers go to the airport, they almost always have to take off their shoes so they can be x-rayed. but only weeks ago congress held hearings on weather tsa s continued concern was overkill. given the latest scare, some congressional leaders may want to rethink that attitude. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. okay, and you re going to see a lot more security when you re traveling now. you will see
