Celebration recognizes service of Vietnam vets

Veterans and their families sat at tables decorated with red, white and blue tablecloths with flags placed in the center as speakers at the front of the room gave speeches commemorating and thanking the service and sacrifices made by Vietnam-era veterans. The Santa Fe Trail chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Raymond Odum (the Las Animas County Veteran Service Officer) and the local American Legion Post organized the event, which was held Friday, April 9 at Fort Wootton. “This is just super,” Vietnam veteran Chet Mochel said about the event. He said that when Vietnam veterans returned home from the conflict, they had a stigma attached to them because of their service. He said that within the last 15 years or so it has become a “neat” thing to be a Vietnam veteran.
